DotA is attributed with launching the multiplayer online battle arena or MOBA genre (games like League of Legends). DotA 2 is a modernised sequel developed by the original DotA designer for Valve in 2009. The game has a lucrative esports scene with a DotA Pro Circuit and many events during the year. The game’s major tournament, The International, has a crowdfunded prize pool that reached $US34 million in 2019. This is one of the highest paying esports around, alongside Star Craft II and Fortnite and the game is regularly updated so there’s always something new to discover.
