League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena game that was launched in 2009 for Microsoft and Mac OS by Riot Games. It quickly became a favourite with competitive gamers. In 2012, Riot Games created its own professional league, the League Championship Series, with players on company salaries and a set tournament schedule. The LCS has regional championships in Europe and North America leading to the LOL World Cup. In 2019, the minimum prize pool was US$2.5 million with 100 million unique viewers – more than the 2019 Super Bowl! Peak viewership consistently outnumbers DotA 2 and Fortnite. The game is praised for its fun game design, 145 customisable champions, and its music and artwork.
