DotA: The Mod That Launched The MOBA Genre

DOTA 2 is the sequel to Defense of the Ancients or DotA: a fan-made Warcraft III modification released in 2002. DotA is attributed with launching the multiplayer online battle arena or MOBA genre (games like League of Legends). DOTA 2 is a modernised sequel developed by the original DotA designer for Valve in 2009. The game has a lucrative esports scene with a Dota Pro Circuit and many events during the year. The game’s major tournament, The International, has a crowdfunded prize pool that reached $US34 million in 2019. This is one of the highest paying esports around, alongside Star Craft II and Fortnite and the game is regularly updated so there’s always something new to discover.

DOTA 2 is a battle between two teams: the Radiant (blue) and the Dire (red) positioned on opposite sides of a map. At the centre of each team base is the Ancient, a building that must be destroyed to win the game. Players control heroes with unique abilities and play in 5-player teams. There are 112 heroes to choose from and players get stronger by earning experience points. The team OG is the current leader after winning The International two years in a row.
